Cakes that take a fun spin on traditional kuih flavours like ondeh-ondeh may not be the latest food fad in town, but that does not mean we still don’t get excited when we spot new bakeries specialising in them.
In case you’re wondering where you can find your fix of old-meets-modern cakes, Alayah Bake Shop might just be the spot.
Located at The Promenade @ Pelikat, Alayah Bake Shop is recently opened by baker-owner Alayah who has been baking personally and commercially for 22 years.
Alayah Bake Shop specialises in premium cakes with local flavours
Alayah Bake Shop offers a lean menu of baked goods with whole cakes starting from S$65 and the more interesting options like Cempedak Creme Brulee Tarts going for S$30 for 15 pieces.
Whilst their online store shows all but 8 items, it is clear that the bakery has a penchant for traditional flavours.
Here’s a look at some of their offerings:
Ondeh-Ondeh Cake (S$65)
Classic Pandan infused cake is filled with crunchy bits of pure Gula Melaka, and covered in Pandan cream before it is topped generously with dessicated coconut. A communal favourite for any occasion.
Snow Cheese Cake (S$70)
Inspired by the Indonesian “Bolu Keju”, this Asian cheesecake is rich, sweet and salty! Layered with cream cheese filling and grated cheddar cheese, this cheesy concoction can only be described as nostalgic and modern at the same time.
Cempedak Cake (S$75)
Perhaps second only to a durian cake in terms of “what the heck were you thinking?”, this cake is certainly for diehard fans of the smaller cousin of the well-known jackfruit only. The cake features a crown of fresh cempedak flesh nestled in between cempedak cream. No extra flavourings because the cempedak speaks for itself.
MSW Durian Pengat Cake (S$80)
Fans of the spiky tropical fruit will love this sweet, rich, melt-in-your mouth durian dessert. Mao Shan Wang Durian flesh is cooked tenderly with gula melaka for 4 hours in this twist on the traditional Malay dessert. To allow the MSW to stand out, flavourings are excluded in both the whipped cream and sponge cake.
Chocolate Indulgence Cake (S$75)
The only traditional (or non-traditional, depending on how you look at it) cake in the menu is this chocolate cake that owner Alayah has perfected to produce a balanced palate. The chocolate cake is layered with chocolate buttercream and whipped cream, covered in chocolate ganache and topped with fresh strawberries for extra sweetness.
Tarts and brownies
Aside from cakes, Alayah Bake Shop also does some confections that would appeal to the sweet-toothed.
Some of their offerings include:
Cempedak Creme Brulee Tarts (S$30)
These cempedak creme brulee tarts pack flavour with sweet cempedak fruit, crispy vanilla tart shell and classic creme brulee topped with caramelised sugar torched to perfection. A.k.a decadence in a single bite. Comes in 15 pieces.
Chocolate Tarts (S$25)
These chocolate tarts are a safer bet if you’re bringing them to a party. Tiny but powerful, each tart has a firm but smooth chocolate centre cradled in a light chocolate shell. Order 15 pieces for the party, and another 15 for yourself. #treatyoself #sharingisnotcaring
Cookie Dough Brownie (S$45)
Here’s a rather unconventional shape for a brownie. The circular pan-style cookie dough brownie packs a punch with its intense mix of Belgium chocolate. Cut a slice and pair it with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream to end off the day in style.
To get your hands on these cakes, you will have to place orders at least 3 days in advance as Alayah will produce carefully selected flavours in her bakery on a day-to-day basis.
